GALWAY AIRPORT SAVED, BUT FOR THIS YEAR ONLY
Date Published: 07-Jun-2011
Galway Airport has been saved, but for this year only.
Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar, has agreed to provide 6 million euro to six regional airports this year.
1.25 million will be given to the Carnmore facility to meet its costs for 2011.
However, Minister Varadkar makes it very clear it will not be possible to provide any further funding to Galway Airport beyond the end of this year.
But in their new business plan, airport management say they will need Government support until 2014.
Responding to the news Galway West Fine Gael TD Brian Walsh says the airport must bring in cost-cutting measures and boost passenger numbers if its to survive over the next few years.
Deputy Walsh says it’s now up to Galway Airport to secure its future over the next three years.
