Galway aiming to turn tables on their arch provincial rivals
GALWAY and Mayo in a ladies football Connacht final should generate plenty of interest, but yet it feels this Sunday’s showdown between these great rivals is slipping under the radar.
Gerry Fahy’s decision to step aside as manager less than three weeks before the league commenced was far from ideal preparation for the Tribeswomen’s Spring endeavours. Fiona Wynne and Maghnus Breathnach were asked to step up to the role of joint managers as they help Galway prepare for the first hosting of a Connacht final since 2019.
Wynne is eager to focus on the challenges ahead instead of focusing on the past as she feels the current set up is well placed to help propel this Galway team to greater heights.
“It’s all very positive. We are looking ahead and not back. It’s fantastic sharing the responsibility and it’s great being part of a team. It’s not just Madhnus and I. We have a great team around us.”
“It’s very rewarding. They (the squad) are working very hard. With the support of the County Board, we are trying to create the best environment where players can succeed. It is a privilege to work with such fantastic athletes. They are very driven and are striving to improve all the time.”
The Kilkerrin/Clonberne contingent were given a well earned break following their run to All Ireland glory. With 10 representatives from Kilkerrin/Clonberne in the 36 player panel, there is no doubt that Galway will field a very different starting line up on Sunday at Tuam Stadium (4pm) than they did in any of their league outings.
