Galway WFC resume league action as they welcome Cork City to Eamonn Deacy Park
By Mike Rafferty
The draw for the quarter-finals of the Women’s FAI Cup took place on Tuesday afternoon and Galway WFC were rewarded with a home tie against DLR Waves with the game schedule for Saturday September 4.
It is not the easiest of tasks for Stephen Lally’s outfit as the sides have met on two occasions in the league this season, with the Dublin team coming out on top each time, and they lie in fourth position in the table, with a considerable points advantage over fifth placed Galway WFC.
The draw saw all the top four teams avoid one another: cup holders Peamount United will travel to meet Treaty United; Shelbourne will meet Cork City; and Wexford Youths will face Athlone Town.
“Look, we are at home and that is an advantage,” said Lally after the draw.
“This draw has given no one a soft landing in their quest for cup glory and one would expect the top three sides to advance and we will be hoping to do the same. The run to winning the cup will certainly be a difficult one as all the top sides will be in the last four,” he said.
Meanwhile, his side return to action tomorrow (Saturday) when they host Cork City at 2pm in Eamonn Deacy Park. It will be a third meeting of the season between the sides, with the teams drawing 3-3 on the opening weekend of the campaign back in March; while the Tribeswomen recorded a 2-0 success when the teams met in Cork in June.
It was in that first encounter with Cork City that debutant Rachel Kearns made her initial impact with a hat-trick; while Chloe Moloney and Aoife Thompson got the goals in the away success down south.
If Galway WFC have not enjoyed the best of good fortune with their midtable position, then Cork City have not exactly set the world alight either. They registered just a second win of the campaign two weeks ago with a 2-1 victory over Treaty United, with their only other success coming in a 1-0 win over Bohemians at the start of July.
