Gallant Galway give their all but lively Cork carry the day
Cork 2-11
Galway 2-7
Eanna O’Reilly at Semple Stadium
THERE was heartbreak for the Galway minor camogie team at Semple Stadium in Thurles as their gallant effort came up short against a slick Cork outfit in Saturday’s All-Ireland Final.
After a strong opening quarter, Aaron Fox’s side lost their dominance thereafter and found themselves chasing a seven-point deficit midway through the second half.
The intervening period saw Cork outscore Galway by 1-8 to 1-1, which put the Rebels firmly in the driving seat and saw the Tribeswomen forced to chase the game. A spirited comeback saw Galway score 1-3 without reply to reduce the margin to a single point late in normal time. But it was Cork who finished strongly to hit the final three points to seal a deserved win on the day.
Galway received a major blow before the game, with Sarsfields forward Shannon Corcoran ruled out of action on Saturday morning. Nevertheless, Fox’s side began brightly, playing with the aid of the wind in the opening half. Catherine Hanley pointed a ’45 to open the scoring for the Tribeswomen. Four minutes later, a long range free from Ciara Hickey found Alannah Fahy, and the Carnmore forward took a neat score.
Cork got their first point when Orlaith Cahalane sent over a free from the left wing. Galway responded within a minute when Olwen Rabbitte pointed after good pass from Megan Gannon. Cork’s Leah Hallihan then had a shot on goal very well saved by Laura Freeney at the expense of a ’45.
