Gaeltacht groups contest welfare centralisation plans
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Efforts are continuing in Connemara to have community welfare officers based locally- despite plans by the Department of Social Protection to centralise the service.
The importance of a service locally through Irish is being stressed in the Gaeltacht.
A meeting is now being sought with the Department’s regional managers in the West of Ireland.
The community welfare officer’s services for Connemara are to be centralised in two locations – Clifden town and Galway city.
Some communities would be over 60 kilometres from these locations.
