GAA at local and national level awaiting the next Government move on virus restrictions
WITH the next Government announcement in relation to non-essential movement outside the home to be made on or before April 12, it is expected GAA officials – county and nationally – will then give some indication of what is to become of the summer’s calendar of fixtures.
Locally, the two opening rounds of the senior and intermediate hurling championships have already fallen by the wayside. In all, it takes 10 weekends – at least – to run off the senior hurling title race, weekends which are now not available. As a result, Galway GAA may have to reformat their championship.
As yet, the Galway senior and intermediate football championships, due to commence on the weekend of May 24, are not affected, although a Government announcement this weekend prolonging the restrictions on non-essential movement may also throw these competitions into disarray.
At inter-county level, it is also understood the GAA will reveal what their plans are for the unfinished hurling and football National Leagues after April 12. GAA headquarters may also indicate at this stage where they stand on running this year’s provincial and All-Ireland championships.
