FUTURE OF LOUGH CORRIB AT RISK BECAUSE OF LACK OF FUNDS

A lack of funding for the Western Regional Fisheries board could threaten the future of Lough Corrib.

An alien invasive weed called ‘Lagarosiphon major’ or ‘curly-leaved pondweed’ has been spreading in the lake since 2005.

EU funding of over 1 million euro awarded to the Central Fisheries Board for research on the pondweed is lying dormant because of the Government’s recruitment embargo.

CEO of the Western Regional Fisheries Board, Greg Forde, says the spread of the invasive plant is choking Lough Corrib.
