CITY TRIBUNE
‘Furthermore’ from AKIN at Galway Arts Centre
‘Furthermore’, an exhibition by the award-winning women’s collective, AKIN, is running at the City’s Galway Arts Centre until Saturday, October 5.
AKIN consists of Margaret Irwin West, Jay Murphy, Leonie King and Dolores Lyne who are celebrating 27 years as a collective and who are also celebrating Margaret’s election to the artists’ association, Aosdána.
‘Furthermor’e is an exploration of place, from Lyne’s atmospheric paintings depicting an archaeological excavation on Inishlyon on the east side of Inishbofin, to Irwin’s copperplate etchings of coastal sacred sites, such as High Island. Jay Murphy has an extensive body of work in the show, much of which was inspired by a visit to the convent of St Agnes of Bohemia in Prague where she captured the dramatic space created by the shadows of revered statues, hinting at a secret world that moves when not being watched. This is in contrast to the vividly coloured beach scenes that capture colliding worlds in the series Where You From.
King’s abstract explorations, meanwhile, are rich in texture and colour and exude energy.
Furthermore, which opened last Friday, will run until October 5. Galway Arts Centre is open Monday to Thursday from 10am-5.30pm, on Fridays from 10am-5pm and on Saturdays from 12pm-5pm and all are welcome.
