A proposal to rezone lands at Briarhill to make way for the biggest shopping centre in the West has been strongly objected
to on the grounds that it goes against the city’s own retail strategy.

The 1.4 hectare site at Lynch’s Roundabout, adjacent to the Dunnes Stores complex which is still under construction, would, if rezoned from residential to commercial (CI) increase the volume of traffic to the area.

City planners last night advised councillors against rezoning the site but Cllr. Declan McDonnell, who proposed it, was adamant that it was his democratic right to make a change to the existing City Development Plan.
