Half a million euro in funding is to be restored to the Westside Sports Campus project.

The confirmation follows concerns raised by Cllr Padraig Conneely in May of this year that the ringfenced 500 thousand euro had been diverted to the Seamus Quirke Road project over-run.

Galway City Council says it was always the intention that the matter would be revisited once the road project reached completion.

The proposed masterplan includes a new GAA pitch for St Michaels, a soccer pitch for Corrib Rangers, walkway, courts and a jogging path.

It’s estimated to cost in the region of 1.4 million euro which would leave a shortfall of 900 thousand euro.

Cllr Conneely told FYI Galway that a report on the long awaited plans will now come before local authority members in October.
