More than €3.7 million is to be invested in improving the transport infrastructure in Galway City this year.

The bulk of the funding, €3.04 million, was allocated to Galway City Council to be used on 24 separate ‘sustainable’ transport projects throughout the city.

The rest of the money, €690,000, was awarded to Bus Éireann for “major improvement” works scheduled to be carried out at Ceannt Station.

The 2013 funding allocation was announced by Junior Transport Minister, Alan Kelly, who said the funding will go towards improving the walking, cycling and public transport experience for city commuters.

The €690,000 revamp of Ceannt Station has nothing to do with the elaborate proposals for a new bus and railway on that site off Eyre Square. This money is being used as a stopgap solution to improve the station until the newer revamp is realised, which could be several years away.
