Full steam ahead

There has been another significant move towards the provision of rail services between Galway and Limerick as planning has been sought for the development of two old railway stations along the route.

Permission is being sought by Iarnród Éireann for the redevelopment of the old Ardrahan and Gort railway stations, which will pave the way for the reopening of the old Galway-to-Limerick and Athenry-to-Ennis rail services, which is expected to take place early next year.

Already some new track has been laid along the 36 mile stretch between Athenry and Ennis as part of the €106 million upgrade.

It is all part of the first phase of the reopening of the Western Rail Corridor and this section will involve the provision of four stations along the route. The old stations at Ardrahan, Craughwell, Gort and Sixmilebridge will be redeveloped while it is also hoped that trains will run between Galway and Limerick up to seven times daily.
