A plan will be put in place over the coming months for the regeneration of Tuam – with a promise of funding to bring the project to fruition.

Vacant public and private buildings in the town are to come under intense scrutiny over the coming weeks as a blueprint is drawn up to revitalise the town centre and beyond.

Members of the public were invited to a seminar in which they could express their views on how some of the public buildings, such as the Town Hall and old railway station, could be developed. It proved to be well attended.

The initiative is being driven by Galway County Council who say that it is their intention to set out a master plan to reinvigorate the town. They want a ‘new look’ for the town centre in particular.

Director of Services Alan Farrell told the Connacht Tribune that it would provide the facelift that Tuam town centre requires given the number of vacant buildings that exist.

And he confirmed that private business interests, who have vacant properties in and around Tuam, would also be consulted as part of this process which began with a public meeting in the local library.

But Mr Farrell said that the regeneration plan for Tuam did not stop at public buildings but that privately owned commercial premises would also be consulted as part of this process.
