Friendship and fun the keys to comic success
Arts Week with Judy Murphy
“A bit like getting back into your own bed,” is how Conor McKenna of comedy trio Foil, Arms and Hog, describes how it feels to be bringing their latest show, Hogwash, home to Ireland after a sell-out international tour that included gigs in US and Canada as well as a run at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Home is good, “but can be a little bit uncomfortable too because the expectations are different”, he adds. “The best thing about Irish audiences is that they fold their arms and say, ‘prove it’. But I don’t mind that.”
Galway audiences will have an opportunity to enjoy get the Foil Arms and Hog act from next Thursday to Sunday, February 2-5, when Hogwash is in Leisureland at 8pm nightly. Friday and Saturday are sold out but tickets are available for Thursday and Sunday.
This is the 12th live show from Seán Finegan (Foil), Conor (Arms) and Seán Flanagan (Hog) who began performing together in 2008 while studying at UCD – architecture, engineering and genetics respectively – earning qualifications that they’ve never used.
“It’s the best so far. It’s really fun to perform”, Conor says of Hogwash, a mix of sketches, improvisation and music, including a parody of Every Musical Ever and a rock anthem from a group of octogenarians looking to escape a retirement home.
He feels Hogwash had the benefit of time.
“We had the whole of lockdown to write it. Normally we’d write a show every year but with this, there was time to let things come up. The audience might not notice the difference but we as performers do.”
