Galway Bay fm newsroom – Researchers who discovered natural conduits under Galway Bay which provide freshwater to Inis Meáin, believe further research is needed.
The discovery was made by NUIG researchers after speaking with residents of the Aran Island who said they had an endless supply of freshwater.
According to today’s Irish Times, Dr. Tiernan Henry from the School of Sciences at NUIG says the freshwater aquifers supplying Inis Meáin could be part of a far more extensive network.
It’s thought that there could be freshwater caverns on Inis Oírr, which has often experienced summer water shortages, if they could be tapped.
Researchers believe the conduits, which could be up to 30 miles long, are caused by water falling on land and dissolving the limestone.
They want further research to be carried out to establish the full extent of the sub-sea link in Galway Bay.
