Freezer body accused sent for trial

A GALWAY city man has been sent forward for trial to the Central Criminal Court charged with the murder of a Dubliner whose frozen remains were found in a freezer behind a fishmonger’s shop in Galway city last June.
Edward Griffin (44), 57 Cimín Mór, Cappagh Road, Salthill, Galway, is charged with the murder of Patrick McCormack (52), on a date unknown between June 1 and September 30, 2002. He appeared before Galway District Court yesterday accompanied by members of his family, dressed in blue jeans, runners and a white striped hoodie.
Detective Sergeant Willie Beirne gave evidence of serving a Book of Evidence on Griffin moments earlier in the courtroom. Inspector Sean Glynn said the DPP had directed Griffin be sent forward for trial to the Central Criminal Court on a single charge of murder.
Judge Aeneus McCarthy returned Griffin for trial to the current sittings of the Central Criminal Court.
He remanded him on bail, as set by the High Court last July, on his own surety of €10,000, which had already been lodged with the court. The accused man’s father, Edward Griffin senior, and his aunt provided two independent sureties of €10,000 each, €3,000 of each has already been lodged in court.
