Free outdoor shows catering for all tastes
Some of Galway’s top performers are taking part in ‘Eyes on the Horizon’, a programme of outdoor performances and events being held in the city’s Woodquay Park this weekend, October 9 and 10, and next October 16 and 17. It’s being presented by Galway City Council under the Government’s Local Live Performance Programming Scheme.
The Saturday shows will run from 12-6pm and feature a diverse array of musical performers including Eoin Dolan, Anna Carmody, Gráinne Cotter, the Marc Roberts Band, Cormac Looby, Rofi James, Galway Street Club, Pádraig Jack, Colohan, Skazz, Derek Ellard and the Future Business, Rodney Owl, BackWest and Amazing Apples.
Sundays are dedicated to jazz, with performances from 12pm to 5pm, featuring Aengus Hackett, Paper Moon, Floating Barrio, Catch the Lemon, the Black Magic Band, Karl Klews, Ring Dem Bells, Four Men and a Bass, the Barbara Vulso Quartet and the Galway Bay Jazz Band
Performances are free and non-ticketed. People aged 18 and older will have to display Covid certification for entry.
Meanwhile, the Sunday lunchtime sessions at the city’s Small Crane area continue this Sunday and again on October 17 with music from the Crane Bar House Band with Páidín Breathnach, Liz Coleman, Áine McHugh, Greg Cotter and Mick Crehan from 1-2pm, followed by the Fast Company Niall Teague, Pádraic Joyce, Kelvin Busher and Neil Fitzgibbons from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. On October 17, the musicians will include Seán Ryan, Ciara Callanan-Ryan and Kathleen Loughnane, and Ogma. Sessions are free and ticketed. Booking at www.galwaysessions.com
And storyteller Rab Fulton will be sharing silly, spooky tales at Galway City Museum this Saturday and at Westside Library on Saturday, October 16. Suitable for children aged seven plus, these are outdoors so people should dress appropriately. Booking information at the Galway City Museum and Westside Library websites.
