Free concert series at Galway City Museum

Classical harpist Clare McCague and concertina player Jack Talty will join the Galway ConTempo Quartet this Saturday, January 11, from 11am-1pm for the first concert in the Spring season of Three Saturdays: Three Kinds of Music.

The series is presented by the Galway Music Residency in conjunction with Galway City Museum, which is hosting the events. ConTempo will feature in all concerts.

Clare McCague, who is studying for a PhD at Dublin Institute of Technology will perform a contemporary programme including Benjamin Britten’s Suite for Harp, op 83 and Charles Oberthur’s Meditation. Clareman, Jack Talty, who is a composer, producer and ethno-musicologist, will play a selection of traditional Irish music.

The second event on Saturday, February 13, will feature award-winning trumpeter Paul Kiernan and traditional fiddler Danny Diamond, whose music incorporates influences from Nordic and American folk traditions.

The final concert will be on March 12 when guests will include the O’Donnell Percussion Quartet from the Royal Irish Academy of Music who will perform a contemporary programme, and fiddler Saileoóg Ní Cheannabháin who will focus on traditional Irish music,

Each week, ConTempo will perform some of their favourite works, starting this Saturday with Three pieces for String Quartet and Concertino by Stravinsky.

The three concerts, which will take place in the foyer of the Museum, are free family-friendly events, thanks to support from the Arts Council, NUIG, Galway City and County Council and the Friends of the Galway Music Residency.
