Galway Bay fm newsroom – Householders in the East Galway area are this morning assessing damage following a freak storm which hit the area last evening.

The weather event unrooted trees, ripped roofs off and demolished headstones during a four minute period.

Following a torrential downpour before 7 last evening, the cloud seemed to come from the banks of the Shannon at Meelick across Clonfert and heading for South Roscommon.

Eyewitnesses said it was about 100 yards wide and destroyed everything in its path.

Roofs were ripped off farm buildings, trees were uprooted and headstones in the grounds of Clonfert cathedral were dislodged.

There are no reports of civilian injuries.
