Fr Burke Park contamination fears

FEARS that another of the city’s parks may be contaminated with dangerous chemicals have been raised as it was revealed last night that two samples of soil from Fr Burke Park show conflicting results.
At a meeting of Galway City Council, city officials confirmed that while one sample taken from the park was normal, a second sample was found to have “elevated levels of lead, arsenic and zinc.”
However, councillors were told officials did not believe “there was any real danger” with the soil in the park and that further tests currently being carried out are expected to be normal.
Director of Environment, Recreation, Amenity and Cultural, Tom Hernon told Galway City councillors that council staff had discovered suspect material during a planting operation at Fr Burke Park in recent weeks.
