Fourth win on trot as Galway Utd climb into second place

GALWAY United manager John Caulfield says the First Division title race is not over yet after watching his side win for the fourth successive game on Friday night, the last three of which were achieved without the concession of a goal.
United put in their most complete performance of the season to completely nullify a UCD side that is full of attacking threat, but on this occasion barely had a sniff of a chance. At the other end, well-taken goals from Ruairi Keating and Wilson Waweru meant United climbed to second in the table to cap a fine team performance that saw United dominate every sector on the pitch.
The gap to Shels is still 11 points thanks to an injury-time winner for the Tolka Park side against Cabinteely on Friday night, but Caulfield was oozing positivity when he spoke to Tribune Sport after Friday’s game.
“Not necessary, today was half-way in the season, there is a long, long way to go,” he said when asked if, considering the run his side is now on, he was frustrated at the slow start United made to the season.
“I thought maybe early in the season, the performances, it wasn’t from a lack of workrate, but sometimes confidence might not have been there and heads might have been down, but the lads did fantastic tonight,” he said.
The big question going into the game was whether he would stick with the same XI that started in the 1-0 win over Treaty United the previous week, or would he bring teenager Alex Murphy back into the side.
He opted for the latter, with Stephen Walsh dropping to the bench, where he was joined by Joe Gorman, one of two new signings announced by United last Friday, with the defender joining from Longford Town. The other new face is Thomas Oluwa, a speedy attacker who has joined on loan from Bohemians until the end of the season.
