WHEN a celebratory flare was set off in the away supporters’ end moments before the final whistle in Eamonn Deacy Park last Friday night, it was clear that Treaty United’s fans were delighted to have seen their side’s stubborn resistance put a dent in Galway United’s automatic promotion hopes.
Given the high number of players involved in Tommy Barrett’s squad who had previously lined out in maroon, it was hardly surprising that they were highly motivated to succeed in this task, and in the final reckoning it was their last line of defence Conor Winn who did the most to frustrate John Caulfield’s side.
Winn almost saw his clean sheet go up in smoke though deep into stoppage time when Alex Murphy flashed a shot into the side netting that half of the ground thought had finally broken the deadlock. It was United’s only clear cut chance of the closing 20 minutes, a damning indictment of their inability to pose a significant threat after Ronan Manning’s departure through injury.
Manning had been moved from a wide left berth into the number 10 position behind Stephen Walsh at the start of the second half, and the switch almost paid instant dividends when Manu Dimas’ intelligent cut back found him in space, but after outwitting Winn by shooting to the near post, he was unlucky to see the ball fly wide off the outside of the upright.
