Former Irish international Kevin Kilbane launches 2013 Macron Galway Cup
Date Published: 17-Jan-2013
The ninth running of the Galway Cup – which this year has a new title sponsor, Macron – was launched in Drom on Tuesday by former Republic of Ireland international, Kevin Kilbane.
The tournament, which was previously known as the Umbro Cup, will take place in Dorm this year from Wednesday August 7 to Saturday August 10 under the new name of the Macron Galway Cup.
The competition, which is played at underage level, will welcome teams from all over Ireland as well as the world over for the four-day event, showcasing the talents of some of the brightest rising young soccer stars.
This new partnership between the Galway Cup and Macron is a five year agreement and comes after Umbro’s eight year run as title sponsor of the event.
“We are excited to name Macron as our new title sponsor of the Galway Cup,” said tournament organiser, Denis Burke.
“I would like to extend a massive thank you to Umbro for eight years sponsoring and supporting the Galway Cup. With that said – we are delighted to announce the collaboration between Macron and the Galway Cup, making the 2013 edition the start of the Macron Galway Cup,” he said.
In conjunction with the launch, Salthill Devon FC also announced a new partnership with Macron as the club’s official kit supplier, an agreement which also includes the club’s Airtricity/League of Ireland side.
“It is an absolute privilege for Macron sportswear to be associated with and be title sponsor of the prestigious Galway Cup Competition & kit supplier to Salthill Devon FC,” said John Fallon, Director of Macron Kits.
“The commitment to the Galway Cup by Macron represents the largest-ever sponsorship of an underage club tournament in Ireland and will help us further establish the Macron brand in the west of Ireland,” he said.
Macron’s first contract in professional football began with Bologna FC in 2001, and the Italian company is now the current gear suppliers to Napoli, Monaco, Braga, RCD Mallorca, AZ Alkmaar, Leeds United and West Ham United, as well as Airtricity League sides Shelbourne, Bohemians, Waterford United, Finn Harps and Longford Town and the Galway United Supporters’ Trust U-19 side.
The company also supplied the kit for Galway United and West United for the Eamonn Deacy Testimonial, which marked the renaming of Terryland Park as Eamonn Deacy Park in August.
