Date Published: 28-Jan-2011
A former Galway Minor footballer, who was found not guilty of dangerous driving causing death, has been given a suspended sentence for careless driving.
Ciaran O’Laoi of Baile an tSagairt, Spiddal was found guilty of careless driving in a road crash in which Mary Dillane of Cartúr Caol, Inverin lost her life over two years ago.
Before sentencing, a victim impact statement was read out by her husband.
Before sentencing, Judge Raymond Groarke described the former Galway Minor footballer as a "loose cannon" and said Mrs Dillane should still be alive today.
He handed down a three-month sentence which he suspended for four years and disqualified O’Laoi from driving for that period.
