CITY TRIBUNE
Form and Substance ceramic show opens at Kenny Gallery
Artists, Jane Seymour and Mike Byrne, are having a joint exhibition of their distinctive hand-built ceramics in the Kenny Gallery.
Entitled Form and Substance, it will be opened this Friday, May 6 at the gallery in the city’s Liosbán Retail Park.
Jane is a self-taught artist and ceramist while Mike trained in ceramic design in Limerick School of Art and Design – but while their backgrounds are different, their work has common elements. These include their use of strong, slab-built, cut sculptural forms and refined treatment of surfaces.
Limerick-based Mike builds tall, abstract vessels, applying layers of different coloured slips, which he sands down to reveal the hues beneath, giving a smooth tactile surface. Numerous firings take place until he is happy with the surface, colour and texture of each piece. Other elements, such as etched copper handles and spouts are attached after the final firing.
Welsh-born Jane who now lives in Cunty Clare, uses clay as a canvas for her drawings. She etches directly into the surface of the unfired clay, painting on layers of oxides and stains. She then multi-fires her work, using techniques that depth and texture to her ceramics.
