Forde rolls back the years to fire Turlough to Junior C title
Turloughmore 2-15
Kilbeacanty 2-11
Former Galway senior star Francis Forde rolled back the years when hitting 2-2 in the opening half to help Turloughmore on their way to the County Championship Junior ‘C’ hurling title in this entertaining final replay at Kenny Park, Athenry on Saturday.
Having drawn first day out, another competitive fixture was expected and, despite Forde striking for his two goals in the first period, this contest didn’t disappoint as Kilbeacanty gave as good as they got throughout the hour – with two minutes to go they had the deficit back to three points.
By this stage though, Turloughmore, and Forde, had done enough, pouncing for two goals of the highest quality in first half injury-time to turn the fixture on its head. With the sides level at 0-7 to 1-4, a long delivery from Ronan O’Shaughnessy broke in behind the Kilbeacanty cover allowing Forde to race onto it and stick it in the back of the net.
Moments later, the impish forward did again. This time, a firm bat from centre-half back Shane Morris saw a Kilbeacanty puckout repelled half way up the field. Collected by Donnacha Hughes, he fed Forde who, in turn, struck his and Turloughmore’s second major.
Although Conor Hennelly did reply with a free in the fifth minute of first half injury-time, James Collins’ charges were very much in the driving seat with a 2-7 to 1-5 lead at the change of ends.
