Ford plan to have 13 electrified models by 2020 as it launches first Hybrid
Bedecked in Titanium and Vignale specification, the new Mondeo HEV is Ford’s first Hybrid Electric Vehicle to meet the growing demand for hybrids in Europe.
Ford say that there will be 13 new electrified cars in its catalogue by 2020 as it makes a determine push for market share.
This week I have been testing the Vignale version with its top-of-the-range trim and a price that seems to make it a viable option now that hybrids are here to stay.
“As this is the first hybrid vehicle launched by Ford in Ireland, this is an important step for us”, says Ciarán McMahon, chairman and managing director of Ford Ireland.
“With its legions of fans in Ireland, Mondeo is such a great model to offer with HEV capability. We are sure that Mondeo HEV will meet the needs of customers who are looking for a more environmentally-friendly car but who do not want to compromise on space, driving dynamics, driving range and comfort.”
From the way it is set up, the Mondeo Hybrid is capable of driving at up to 135 km/h in electric mode through a combination of a specially-developed 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine and two electric motors – one to top-up the engine’s power output, while the other charges the lithium-ion battery pack.
Ford, in its brochure, claims the Mondeo HEV delivers a consumption rate of 4.2 L/100km. After a week in the car over 1,000 kilometres of mixed urban and rural driving, the fuel consumption achieved was 6.6L/100km, a figure that related to general driving throughout. With really careful use of the throttle, that can be reduced even further.
