Galway Film Fleadh is now accepting entries for its annual Pitching Competition, which will be held online this year due to Covid-19 restrictions. The closing date for anyone who wants to submit a short script is Thursday, June 18.

The Fleadh dates are July 7-12 and the entire event is being held online for 2020.

The Pitching Competition, which is now in its 15th year, has consistently demonstrated that good writing remains the backbone of the audio-visual sector and has given many writers an opportunity to get their foot in the door of the industry, according to the organisers.

People are asked to submit a 500-word written pitch (from beginning to end – with no cliff-hangers). These are welcome from writers of any skill level. Any genre of drama, documentary or animation will be considered.  Finalists will be selected to pitch their idea live online as an ‘Elevator Pitch’ of 90 seconds to a virtual panel of industry judges and an audience during next month’s event. The winner will be announced at an online Awards Ceremony during the Fleadh and will receive a cash prize of €3,000.

In addition to the money and the opportunity to pitch to industry professionals, being selected for the Pitching Competition offers other benefits too, according to previous participants.

It has helped them with opening the door to producers, having their projects optioned by producers, receiving mentorships to hone their craft, bolstering their confidence and giving them their first opportunity to win over an audience.

Meanwhile, for the winner, the prize can provide them with time to develop and expand their pitch into a full script for a feature film.
