Five Galway players were honoured in the annual Basketball Ireland end-of-season awards, which were announced last Friday, including two Player of the Year awards.

Paul Kelly of Moycullen BC was named as the U-20 Men’s Player of the Year after a stellar season for club, school (St Paul’s Oughterard) and country, with his MVP performance in the U-20 National Cup Final the highlight, when he scored 38 points in Moycullen’s 71-65 win over UCD Marian.

Tony Ezeonu of St Joseph’s College (the Bish) BC was selected as the Male U-16 Schools Player of the Year, thanks in no small part to his 23-point haul in U-16 A School’s League final which saw the Bish record a 49-44 win over St Paul’s of Cavan. That was revenge for the Nun’s Island side, as they had been beaten by St Patrick’s in the Cup semi-final earlier in the season, with the Cavan side hitting the winning score in the final 30 seconds of the game

On the national league front, three Galway players were named in various teams of the year. Claire Rockall of Maree BC made the Women’s Super League All-Star Team One after helping to elad Maree to a third place finish in the league.

Maree, on its debut season in the Super League, went into the penultimate weekend of the season with a chance to win the league, but defeat to DCU Mercy saw the Dublin side claim the title. Maree finished the season with a win at home to IT Carlow the following weekend, but DCU Mercy’s defeat away to Glanmire saw the Cork side pip Maree for the silver medal.
