Fit-again Conroy is raring to go

TEAM captain Paul Conroy is raring to get back to action as he has made a full recovery from the foot injury which ruled him out for seven weeks just in time for Galway’s Connacht Championship semi-final clash with Sligo on Saturday evening.

Although Conroy is unlikely to be handed a starting role, the attacker’s return to fitness is a big boost in the week in which two of his club colleagues, Eoin Concannon and Johnny Duane, made headlines for the wrong reasons after being axed from the county panel.

The St James’ attacker had never missed a senior championship game through injury prior to last month’s demolition of London and was delighted to come through a full training session with the Tribesmen on Sunday morning. The fractured metatarsal ruled him out of both the 3-17 to 0-7 win over London and his club’s 2-8 to 1-6 victory over Cortoon Shamrocks in the first round of the county championship two weeks ago.

Currently working as a teacher at Colaiste Iognaid in the city, Conroy is hoping to make an impact by coming off the bench against a Sligo side who have had the upper hand over the Tribesmen in championship clashes in recent years. “Since I made my debut in 2008, I have never missed a championship game through injury,” he told Tribune Sport this week.

“I was in Ruislip, even though I could not take part in the game. It was annoying at the start, but looking back I have not been troubled by injuries. I probably could have togged for the Cortoon game, and taken a risk, but the medical advice was to rest for another couple of weeks.”
