A ban could be imposed on fishing in some areas off the West Coast if a proposal by Environment Minister, John Gormley is adopted

Minister Gormley is hoping that EU member states will support his plan to protect extensive cold-water coral reefs in deep sea areas in the West

According to Today’s Irish Times the fragile coral reefs identified in four areas off the West Coast host 900 species, such as sponges, crabs, lobsters and clams

A decision on the proposed fishing ban will be made at a forthcoming meeting of the EU Fisheries Council
