There has been significant progress on the provision of a new fire station for Tuam – with the project shortly expected to go to tender.

This means that potential developers will be invited to express an interested in the construction of the new fire station which will be located at the Milltown Road out of the town.

Several years ago, and at the height of the property boom, a half-acre site for the new facility was acquired – but when the recession hit, there was no further progress.

There have been repeated calls for Galway County Council and the Department of the Environment to provide a few fire station for the area. Its current base within the town is restrictive and is located on a one-way street.

The new location on the existing N17 is located about a mile from the town centre and when the new fire station is completed, it is said that response times to emergency situations will dramatically improve.

Galway East TD Sean Canney confirmed that the proposed new fire station will go to tender in the very near future. He described as an important development for Tuam and the whole North Galway area.

Minister Canney said that the new fire station in Tuam to be built on a greenfield site has been included as part of the current five-year Fire Services Capital Programme.

“Galway County Council recently submitted a revised cost plan to Minister Simon Coveney and his officials are working closely with the council to progress it to the next stage.

“I have been informed by Minister Coveney that this project will go to tender shortly.

“The provision of a new fire station for Tuam is essential for the smooth running and efficiency of the emergency fire services in the town and I look forward to seeing work finally getting underway very soon.

“In addition, the benefits of moving to a new site are numerous, with the fire service housed in a facility that fully support the needs of a modern fire and rescue service,” Minister Canney said.
