Film screening a highlight of Festival of the Sea

A special screening of the documentary film Atlantic will take place in Claddaghduff Community Hall on Friday August 11 as part of this year’s Cleggan Claddaghduff Festival of the Sea.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with a panel that will include the film’s director, Risteard Ó Domhnaill, the man also responsible of the award-winning documentary, The Pipe.

Emmy Award-winning actor Brendan Gleeson narrates Atlantic, which was shot across Ireland, Norway and Newfoundland (Canada) by Scannáin Inbhear (Inver Films) and takes on the powerful interests carving up Ireland’s ocean.

Atlantic follows the fortunes of three fishing communities in Ireland, Norway and Newfoundland, as they battle for control of the resources in their waters and struggle to maintain their way of life in the face of mounting economic and ecological challenges.

As the big oil companies drive deeper into their fragile seas, and the world’s largest fishing companies push fish stocks to the brink, coastal people and the species they rely upon may be reaching a point of no return.

A revealing documentary film about the devastation of the Atlantic Ocean and the livelihoods of coastal communities, Atlantic was awarded Best Irish Documentary at the Dublin International Film Festival 2016.

The screening will be held at 7.30pm, and admission is €8.

The Cleggan Claddaghduff Festival of the Sea runs from Thursday August 3 to Monday August 14, starting with the crowning of the Queen of Festival in Newman’s at 9pm. There will also be opening night music in Oliver’s from 7.30pm.
