Film Fleadh remains on script despite Covid-19 challenges
How to Fall in Love in a Pandemic, a short documentary about an evolving relationship during Covid-19, won the award for Best Irish Documentary at last week’s Galway Film Fleadh and now qualifies for next year’s Oscars.
Although it was held virtually, all the Fleadh’s normal events took place – screenings, online marketplace meetings, seminars, talks and the pitching competition.
Companies and producers from 22 countries took part in this year’s Film Fair, which is the industry arm of the Galway Film Fleadh. This is an informal, accessible networking event that offers a launchpad for film projects at various stages of development, through its vibrant marketplace.
The event involved more than 570 one-on-one meetings between producers and international sales agents, distributors, broadcasters, film funds and talent agents. Countries that took part included Ireland, UK, Germany, Korea, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Poland, Finland, Belgium, Romania, Serbia, Norway, Georgia, Denmark, Austria, the US and Canada
Three free webinars on the theme of Looking Towards Tomorrow were held online as part of the Fleadh Forum. These focused on issues facing the film industry in light of the Covid-19 pandemic and were addressed by industry experts from the US, the UK, Germany and Ireland.
They discussed issues such as the development of projects, the future of co-production and the next steps for film sales, distribution and marketing.
