An extensive file on the tragic deaths of two Ballinasloe women has been completed by the Gardaí and has been sent forward to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Lifelong pals Deirdre Kilmartin and Maureen Dooley were killed in a freak road traffic collision earlier this year while they were out on their regular evening walk. The whole community was devestated by what happened.

Garda Inspector Declan Rock in Ballinasloe confirmed to the Connacht Tribune that their intensive inquiries had now been completed and a file had been sent to the DPP.

The file contains up to 80 statements from those who were interviewed as part of the lengthy Garda investigation that was conducted following the deaths that occurred while the two women were walking in the vicinity of Station Road in Ballinasloe.

Inspector Rock said that the Gardaí in Ballinasloe were now awaiting directions from the DPP on how to proceed. He expects that these directions will be issued in early September.

The two women, in their mid-50s, walked various routes around the town but on the fateful evening in March they were walking in their high-viz vests towards the railway station when the freak tragedy occurred.

As they strolled along the footpath, there was a collision between two vehicles and within a split second their lives were ended through no fault of their own.

The town was numbed by grief and the families of the two women are still trying to come to terms with their loss.
