Fifty new jobs are to be created in June when international pub chain McGettigan’s opens a new premises in Eyre Square.

The company is carrying out a €2.5 million refurbishment of the former Bentley premises to create a bar, restaurant and live music venue.

The chain already operates bars in Dublin, Limerick, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, and will mark its arrival in Galway with a sponsorship deal for one of the main races at the Summer Festival in Ballybrit Racecourse.

The McGettigan family – originally from Donegal – follow much the same décor plan for all their premises.

Group Managing Director, Dennis McGettigan, told the Galway City Tribune that the Eyre Square venue is set to open on Thursday, June 18.

He said he has been ‘eyeing up’ Galway City for a suitable premises for quite some time.

“Galway is a city I love personally. It has a wonderful buzz and we are especially excited to be opening during the summer months. We will be taking an active part in the Galway Races and even sponsoring one of the main races. What’s not to love about Galway?

“We are all about live music. Our background is with The Baggot Inn, which was one of the main live music venues in Dublin at one time. My father gave gigs to U2 before they became global megastars.

“We look forward to welcoming the best live music to Galway. Live music and Galway City go hand in hand.

“It’s going to represent what we do globally with McGettigan’s. We guarantee very high-end pub food. We’ve won several awards for our food internationally through the guidance of our group head chef, Derek Flynn, who has a background in 5 star hotels.

“We’ll have our official opening on June 18. All going to plan, we hope to have the new bar open a few days before this for a soft opening. It is early days and work has just started, so I say all of this with fingers crossed,” said Mr McGettigan.

He said the investment in Galway City is worth around €2.5 million, and the venue will employ fifty people.

The chain was set up by Donegal man Jim McGettigan in the 1960s and now has nine premises – Dublin, Letterkenny, Limerick, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Fujairah and three in Dubai. It also operates a five star hotel in Dubai.

As well as Eyre Square, new pubs will also be launched in Wicklow, New York and London in the coming months.

Meanwhile, internal construction work is ongoing at the former Síbín (the Stage Door) premises in Woodquay, which is now owned by Salthill man John Lillis and his wife Jennifer.

They formed Tipsy Taverns Ltd at the end of 2014 for the project, which will see a bar and restaurant open in the coming months.

The couple set up the hugely successful Irish Times bar and restaurant in San Francisco in 2011.
