Fibín’s modern take on a legendary love story
Galway’s Fíbín Theatre Company is currently in rehearsal for Tóraíocht, a new version of the epic tale, The Pursuit of Diarmuid and Gráinne.
Written by Philip Doherty, Tóraíocht is being directed by actor and director Mikel Murfi.
Tóraíocht Dhiarmada agus Gráinne, which is part of the legendary Fianna cycle of stories, is a love story full of extraordinary feats and monsters.
Philip Doherty’s modern version “moves faster than any car-chase, jumps higher than any vaulter, and loves twice as much as any Frenchman, as Diarmuid and Gráinne attempt to stay one step ahead of Fionn and the Fianna”, according to Fibín’s producer Ruth Gordon.
“We’re very excited to be collaborating with Mikel and Philip on such a thrilling story. The conversation about Tóraíocht started over two years ago, so we are really eager for audiences to see this engaging, energetic, and very funny play,” she explains.
The will be told in both in Irish and English, with a strong emphasis on visuals, and will be performed by Lesley Conroy, Kate Finegan, Liz Fitzgibbon, Jonathan Gunning, Fionnuala Gygax, and Seán T. Ó Meallaigh.
Set designer is by Sabine Dargent who most recently worked with Mikel Murfi on Swan Lake / Loch na hEala, one of the stand-out performances of Dublin Theatre Festival.
The play, for ages 16 and older, will be at Galway City’s Black Box Theatre from November 10-13, with evening and matinée shows. There will be a special schools’ performance on Friday, November 11, at 2pm.
