The Fianna Fail group in the city council is to propose amendments to the procedures committees in an effort to stop meetings being abandoned.

It followed last night’s heated exchange between councillor Padraig Conneely and city officials when he refused to withdraw remarks.

Director of Services Eugene Cummins was answering questions on the Galway fire services when Councillor Conneely spoke up over what he claimed were vague responses.

City Manager Joe O’ Neil requested several times that Cllr Conneely withdraw remarks made, and when he refused to do so management stood up and left.

Despite pleas by several councillors that the meeting continue, city officials and councillors filed out of the room.

It came as a shock to around 20 members of gallery 126 in the city, who had waited over 5 hours to hear about arts grants which were on the agenda for discussion.

Speaking on Galway Talks, Councillor Peter Keane said new procedures had to be put in place.
