FG and FF give pledges on farm issues
THE IFA claimed this week that they have received clear commitments from the Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael party leaders – one of them in all probability the next Taoiseach – on two issues of vital interest to West of Ireland farmers.
According to the IFA, both the Fine Gael leader and current Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, and Fianna Fáil head, Micheál Martin, are committed ‘with no ifs or buts’ to a policy of no cuts in the suckler herd.
IFA National Livestock Chairman, Mayo’s Brendan Golden, said that both party leaders had committed to increasing direct payments for sucklers in the next Government.
Brendan Golden was speaking following the IFA AGM last week where the political party leaders were questioned on their agriculture policies.
“We put a very strong set of policy proposals to the party leaders on beef and livestock issues including Brexit, CAP, climate action and the need for a €300 per suckler cow payment,” said Brendan Golden.
He described Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, as ‘strong’ on Brexit saying that there can be no tariffs, no taxes and no quotas in any EU deal with the UK.
Mr. Golden said that the Taoiseach also gave a full endorsement to the live export trade and said he would maximise the CAP budget from the EU – and top it up, if necessary – with national funding.
