FEARS WANDERING HORSES ON HEADFORD ROAD WILL CAUSE FATALITIES

Lives will be lost if the number and frequency of wandering horses on the Headford Road is not tackled.

That’s according to Councillor Jim Cuddy who has warned that without firm action to microchip the animals and hold their owners responsible, fatalities will occur on the road.

The view was supported by Cllr Malachy Noone and Cllr Mary Hoade who said she had received a commitment from the garda superintendent that the matter would be flagged in order to work with the local authority.

Cllr Cuddy says that in many cases, the animals break out onto the road from sheer starvation and owners have an obligation to provide sufficient grazing land.

A motion proposed by Cllr Gerry Finnerty was also passed at last evening’s meeting to have an official from the Department of Agriculture address councillors on possible ways to tackle the issue.
