There are fears for the future of jobs at Hibernian Insurance Company in Galway.

Last night the company announced major restructuring plans which will result in the loss of 580 jobs nationwide.

80 percent of the jobs losses will hit the firm’s headquarters in Dublin, but there are expected to be some job losses in Galway and Cork.

The jobs will be shed over 3 years with the first of these being transferred to Bangalore in India early next year.

UNITE trade union, which represents workers at Hibernian, says it will apply to the Labour Court to deal with the axing of jobs.

Hibernian group chief-executive, Stuart Purdy, says they will provide re-training and redeployment opportunities.
