MARTS, farmers and farm representatives have given the ‘thumbs up’ to the specially organised fatstock sales being held across different sales’ venues across the county.

According to some of the marts involved in the sales, there was a really buoyant trade for the heavier cattle with a lot of competition around the ringside for the animals on offer.

The campaign – launched by the IFA in conjunction with the marts – is aimed at trying to give farmers a ‘second option’ in terms of selling their heavier cattle, rather than going directly to the factories.

Galway IFA Chairperson, Anne Mitchell, said that the fatstock sales at marts around the county had been a resounding success so far with a number of them to be completed over the coming week.

“There was a lot of competition for stock around the ringside and online and farmers were really delighted at the prices that were achieved.

“First of all, thanks to the farmers who supported the sales and secondly to the marts who were always very enthusiastic about the idea.

“What these sales have achieved is to provide a level of competition for heavier stock while the farmer also has the option of selling or not selling,” said Anne Mitchell.

Loughrea Mart Manager, Jimmy Cooney, said that their sponsored fatstock sale last week had been a wonderful success with a good turnout of cattle and a lot of competition around the ring.
