Farmland steeped in history

Farrell Auctioneers are handling the sale of a unique coastal residential farm just outside Kinvara.

Comprising an old farmhouse and separate derelict cottage on 50 acres, the farm is in current ownership of the Reidy family who reside in USA but originally was the property of Count de Basterot and built by the French family in the 18th century.

In 1906 Count de Basterot was the owner of a mansion house here. The main house was demolished circa 1925 and we believe that the original stone of the house is buried on the lands.

The de Basterots were an old Bordeaux family who married into the French of Doorus Estate at Kinvara. Count Florimond de Basterot, a life-long traveller divided the year between Doorus, Paris and Rome. Doorus like Coole Park, Tulira and Renvyle became a meeting place for literacy celebrities such as WB Yeats, Edward Martin and Lady Gregory.

It was on a wet summer’s afternoon, sheltering in de Basterots’ Doorus home in 1898 that plans were laid to establish a national theatre of Ireland in Dublin, which later became the famous Abbey Theatre. WB Yeats in his autobiography mentions his visits to the property.

The 50-acres are full of mystery and adventure with approximately 25 to 30 acres of grazable lands and the remainder is made up of mature woodland, six islands and two inland fresh water lakes which are surrounded by some ancient large Beech trees. The farm is bounded by sea shore to the North East and possesses some of the most picturesque views of Kinvara Bay out to the Atlantic Ocean.

The property, which was valued at €2m in 2006, is on the market at €575,000.
