Farmers pull back in buying fertiliser
MANY farmers in the West of Ireland either haven’t bought bag fertiliser yet – or else cannot get it – according to IFA representatives and the findings of a Farmers Journal poll last week.
Henry Walsh, Galway IFA Environment Rep, told the Farming Tribune, that if anything, the problem with sourcing and purchasing fertiliser had got more acute over the past week or two.
“Availability of fertiliser is now a serious issue and the single biggest threat to farming enterprises across the region – the real fear is that if we don’t grow enough feed and we get a difficult Winter, serious fodder supply problems could arise,” said Henry Walsh.
He added that there were price variations from place to place with different product and there were now indications of protected urea rising to €1,200 per tonne – and not always available at that.
Compound fertilisers such as 18-6-12 (again where available) were selling for around €750 to €800 per tonne, said Henry Walsh, with ongoing issues over supply of the product.
