Farmers advised on terms of BEAM scheme
AN agricultural consultant has advised farmers planning to draw down aid from the Beef Exceptional Aid Measure (BEAM) to be aware of the terms and conditions that apply to the scheme.
New Inn agricultural consultant, Vincent Costello, said that the main requirement for farmers under this scheme was in the reduction of bovine livestock manure nitrogen by 5%.
This 5% reduction had to be achieved from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021 and would be based on a comparison with the period July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019, said Vincent Costello.
“Farmers will not be able to reduce their bovine nitrogen level through the exporting of slurry or by the claiming of additional land – this is something that applicants need to be very clear about.
“The simplest way to achieve this is to reduce stocking levels. However, it can also be achieved through the restructuring of an applicant’s herd,” said Vincent Costello.
He also advised farmers that they needed to be acutely aware of the tight deadline for applications – midnight on Sunday, September 8 – so time should not be wasted in preparing the necessary details.
“Farmer will receive €100 per head for every animal slaughtered over 12 months old between September 24, 2018 and May 12, 2019 up to 100 animals – and €40 for every suckler cow that calved in 2018 up to 40 cows.
