A proposal by TuamÕs Mayor Martin Ward to include mandatory refuse charges in tenancy agreements for council houses has been put on hold.
The Mayor asked the town council to approve this measure as an attempt to stamp out illegal disposal of refuse by some householders.
Mayor Martin Ward said Galway County Council need to get tough on householders who do not dispose of their refuse properly.
But other Tuam Town Council members said his suggestion of mandatory refuse collection charges being written into tenancy agreements for local authority houses needed to go back to the drawing board.
