Family appeal for return of World War II medals

A special appeal has been made for the return of three World War II medals, stolen from a car in the Shantalla area of the city last month.

The medals – one for service in the RAF (Royal Air Force) – had been left in a silver box in the back seat of car parked on Ashe Road, Shantalla.

The theft occurred between 10pm on Saturday, May 11 and 6am on Sunday May 12 – Gardaí have made a special appeal for information that could lead to the return of the medals.

“These medals are of great sentimental value to the family concerned and we would strongly appeal for their return. They are of very little value to anyone else but the medals are a family heirloom – the family are extremely anxious to get them back,” said the Garda spokesman.

The theft occurred on the day of the FA Cup final between Wigan and Manchester City – something that might help to jog people’s memories – and Gardaí are hoping that someone might have seen suspicious activity in the area that night.

“Those items are of very little value to the thieves but in terms of sentimental value to this family, they are precious. We would appeal for their return,” said a Garda spokesman.
