Up to 100,000 pilgrims will flock to the 39th annual Galway Solemn Novena when it returns to Galway Cathedral, running from Monday next to Tuesday week with six sessions every day.

It’s a massive logistical operation involving over 300 volunteers and a Redemptorist team of twelve as well as a full Cathedral staff.

There are six sessions scheduled each day; on weekdays they take place at 7.30am, 11am, 1.10pm, 3.30pm, 7.30pm and 9pm. Sunday’s times are 9am, 10.30am, 12.30pm, 4.30pm, 6.30pm and 8pm.

The preachers this year include some of the senior Redemptorists from the Esker retreat in Athenry – including Fr Denis Luddy and Fr Brendan Callanan, who has worked for 33 years in South America and is currently superior of the Redemptorist Community in Esker.

The preachers also include Clare Gilmore who has worked in youth ministry, hospital chaplaincy and adult faith development.

The theme this year is holiness and will focus on a letter written by Pope Francis in 2018 and titled ‘Rejoice and be Glad, on the Call to Holiness in today’s World, Called to be Saints, Living the Beatitudes’.

The hymns will be performed by Galway Cathedral organists and cantors from the Redemptorist Novena team.
