“I’m a real home bird. I love being at home and I don’t really go in for long tours,” says Sharon Shannon whose Galway gig on Saturday, December 29 is as close to home as the Salthill resident can get.

The Sharon Shannon big Band, with singers Shane McGowan, Mundy and Desmond O’ Halloran, are playing in Leisureland as part of a special tour which sees the Clare musician join forces with the former Pogues’ frontman, McGowan.

The tour came about when McGowan’s manager approached Sharon’s manager saying that the singer/songwriter was interested in doing a guest spot with the Sharon Shannon Big Band.

“I was delighted, I’m a huge fan of his,” says Sharon. “We’ve done a rehearsal in Dublin and it went really well. Shane is looking at this as an opportunity to do stuff other than Pogues’ songs. It’ll be great to hear himself and Dessie and Mundy doing Courtin’ in the Kitchen,” she laughs. And she advises audiences to generally expect “punked up versions of old Irish songs”.
