Fahy appointed CEO of Galway WFC as Lally’s side look for back-to-back wins
By Mike Rafferty
Galway WFC have taken a step into the future with the appointment of Ruth Fahy as their new CEO, becoming the first Airtricity Women’s National League side to create and fill such a position.
The announcement of her appointment was made by chairman Stephen Moran, who described it as a very exciting time for Galway WFC.
“We want to get to the next level and we believe that Ruth can make a massive contribution,” he said of the Galway native, who will take up her new role on Wednesday next, September 1.
“We have teams at senior, U-19 and U-17 grades, so it is important that we have structures in place to help these players develop and that we can compete seriously at national level,” he said.
For Fahy, her new position will mean the end of her Galway WFC footballing career: tomorrow’s home game against Bohemians will be her last from a playing point of view.
Her own playing career started with Salthill Devon, before she progressed to National League level with Castlebar Celtic, Galway WFC and Wexford Youths where she was part of a very successful team. Injuries then took its toll on the midfielder for a few years, before she returned to live in the city recently and got back involved with her local club again.
Speaking to City Sport on Wednesday evening, the new CEO gave a quick insight of what was in store for her in the new job.
“Along with the board, we are designing a strategic plan at the moment and my job is to make that happen. Football of course is one stream with the ultimate goal of winning the league the main objective. Also helping to put structures in place and creating a high-performance environment, where nutrition, psychology, strength and conditioning amongst other things are done correctly”.
